National Arts Centre — the best light in Ottawa
Floor-to-ceiling windows, a terrace overlooking the canal, the Red Steps, and spring blossoms nobody tells you about. The NAC is in a category of its own.

The NAC sits at the centre of Ottawa in a way that very few venues can claim — steps from Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, and the city’s best hotels. But location alone doesn’t explain why we keep coming back. The building was redesigned by the same architect behind Toronto’s National Ballet building, and that lineage shows in every corner: clean lines, elegant proportions, and spaces that feel considered rather than decorated.
The light here is genuinely something. Floor-to-ceiling windows run through the main event spaces, pulling in a soft natural glow that makes the entire day easier to shoot. The Lantern Room is especially beautiful for ceremonies. The terrace overlooking downtown is one of the best spots in the city for sunset portraits — and the Red Steps outside are made for the kind of portrait that stops people mid-scroll.
One thing worth knowing: if your date falls in late April or early May, the spring bloom trees at the Box Office entrance are a hidden gem. Most couples don’t plan for them and then discover them on the day. We always tip off our NAC couples in advance so they’re on the route. Every time we shoot here, we leave with frames we’re genuinely proud of.
Planning a wedding at the NAC? We’d love to hear what you have in mind — the spaces, the vibe, and the moments that matter most to you.
